The phone rings. A caller asks about a job, and when you ask how they found you, they say they saw you online. That could be your website, a Facebook post, a listing site, or a business card left on a counter. You wrote the number in all of those places, and the call came in on the same line, so you cannot tell them apart.
Why one number hides the answer
When every place you advertise shows the same number, every call looks the same. You can count calls, but you cannot say which effort produced them. That makes it hard to decide where the next marketing dollar should go. A channel that produces nothing and a channel that produces half your business look identical on the phone bill.
A number for each place you advertise
The fix is a separate tracking number for each place. One for the website, one for Facebook, one for the business card, one for a listing site. Each number rings the same business, but every call and text is stamped with the channel the number belongs to. You can buy and release numbers from the admin, so adding a new channel does not need a phone company.
Calls that still get answered
Tracking numbers forward to your cell. If you do not answer, the call goes to voicemail. There is also a voicemail only mode, which takes a message without ringing anyone, for the hours you are not working. Greetings can be spoken in a voice you choose, recorded in the browser, or uploaded.
Voicemails are stored securely and played back in the admin. You can have a voicemail transcribed on demand, so a message from a customer can be read in a few seconds instead of listened to in full.
Texts, caller ID, and the rest
The same system includes a two way text inbox with threads, so you can send and receive texts and pictures from the admin rather than from your personal phone. Inbound texts can be forwarded to your cell. Opt out keywords are honored automatically, and there is a per business blocklist.
You can also register your business name so that it shows as the caller ID on the phones you call. Registration is per business, with status tracking, so you can see where it stands.
Reading the result
Call and text analytics in the admin show activity by channel and over time. After a few weeks you can see which number rings and which one sits quiet. That does not tell you everything, since a quiet channel may still send people to the website, but it replaces a guess with a count.
The tracking only works if each number goes in exactly one place. Put one number on the card, a different one on the Facebook page, and a third on the website, and keep them there. Mixing them up brings you back to the original problem.
If you advertise in more than one place and answer a phone, this is a small change with a clear payoff. The next time someone calls and says they found you online, you will know where.
The first call is free. Bring the phone number on your cards, your ads, and your listings, and the question of which one is actually working. We will tell you what we can do, what we cannot, and what we think you should do next. Visit https://evolv-to.net/contact to set it up.
